5 Disadvantages:

1. Fake news/hate news

Misleading stories have always existed and have impacted public opinion, generated emotional reactions and played a role in shaping the public sphere, as have incitement to violence or hatred. However, there is growing awareness that the unprecedented reach of digital platforms has amplified their detrimental effect.

2. Causing relationships to break down:

How would we even live without social media? In a world where our phones are the first and last thing we see every morning and the last thing at night, it’s no wonder social media can affect our relationships, both online and offline. We are paying more attention to the device than the person with whom we are conversing with.

3. Social media addiction:

Some of us spend far too much time on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. We have become so obsessed with everybody else’s life on social media, and forget to live our own. We end up comparing our lives to theirs, and we become insanely jealous because they have the latest car, the newest fashion, the perfect love life and the list goes on. This leads us to depression, relationship breakdown and even debt because you are trying to keep up with the Jones.
What we don’t see is that everybody’s life is not so perfect or how much debt they have, the issues they are dealing with in the background, we only see what they want us to see. Live your own life!

“Today, spend a little time cultivating relationships offline. Never forget that everybody isn't on social media.”

4. Cyberbullying:

Cyberbullying has become an epidemic and affects many groups of people, young and old alike. It can occur through sending Text or posting meaningful content about someone else through online social media, forums, or gaming where people can view, participate in, or share content. It can cause embarrassment or humiliation, and some cyberbullying crosses the line into unlawful or criminal behaviour.

5. Risk of Identity theft:

For those who are not that security conscious while online are more than likely to have their identity stolen. Don’t share any info with sites unless you are comfortable with that information being posted like photo’s, and birthday posts etc. These small bits of info can be used by criminals to help them impersonate you.
Social media is full of scammers who take advantage of weak privacy settings to lure you in. Even if you don’t fall victim to a phoney Facebook advert or phishing email, cyber thieves can still extract personal information from your supposedly your private profile.
