Fear! Why does it rule our lives so much? Perhaps our parents perpetuated the problem with their classic rants of “Don’t stick that up your nose….it will kill you!!” or “You’ll fall and die if you keep climbing that!!”. Perhaps our Moms were a bit dramatic, that’s probably where we get it from.
Entrepreneurship is probably the most fearful career choice a person can make. It brings with it much more complication and ownership than the corporate world. In a Corporate job you can just rock up each day, try your best…. or not, depending on how you are feeling that day, and things still run along relatively smoothly as you are a small cog in a big wheel. You aren’t really pushing past your fears when feeling like a small cog.
Ah, but when it’s just you and perhaps a partner then bad days are not an option, because bad days could mean bad paydays. And this a fear for any everyone with bills to pay and mouths to feed.
“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.” —Marie Curie
When everything is on your shoulders it can be hard to stave off the fear of failure, but facing your fears is good and can mean all the difference in living a life of mediocracy or living a life that you can truly be proud of. This is an obvious benefit of pushing past your fears because there are so many of us living lives that don’t reflect our true potential.
By pushing yourself past your fears you will come to the realisation that’s its all in your head, and if you can push past those fears and accomplish what you thought you couldn’t then fear holds no control over you anymore.
“Everything you ever wanted is on the other side of fear” – George Addair
Our parents come from a great generation of entrepreneurs, and to us they seemed so brave by facing their fears head on and starting their companies, building them from the ground up and working tirelessly to provide for not our only us but for their employees too. When we started our careers in the corporate world it felt good to have our first jobs in the relative safety of corporate life until we experienced a round of redundancies and our safety bubble was unceremoniously burst.
“The only place that fear can exist is in our thoughts of the future. It is a product of our imagination, causing us to fear things that do not at present and may not ever exist. That is near insanity. Do not misunderstand me, the danger is very real, but fear is a choice.” – Will Smith
If there is only really love and fear, and all other emotions are just derivatives thereof then wouldn’t it be of so much more benefit to face your fears head on and chose a life of love. Love can only lead to more positivity in your life, more chances to be the person you chose to be.
F-E-A-R has two meanings: ‘Forget Everything And Run’ or ‘Face Everything And Rise.’ The choice is yours. – Zig Zadlar
